Texting-and-driving tickets up in Massachusetts

Texting and driving is very hazardous conduct that can result in injuries or deaths. So, a person or family could find themselves dealing with life-altering ramifications as a result of a texting driver’s actions. In the face of such challenges, a person or family may feel powerless. However, they may have important legal rights that could help them with addressing these challenges. Personal injury attorneys can give compensation-related legal guidance to individuals and families harmed by a texting driver.

In addition to being dangerous, texting and driving is also against Massachusetts law. Such driving conduct has been illegal in the state since partway through 2010, so a driver can be given a ticket if police in the state spot them texting and driving.

According to state data, every year since Massachusetts’ texting-and-driving ban was established, the number of texting-while-driving tickets issued annually has gone up. In the first full year of the ban, 2011, the annual ticket total was 1,153. By last year, it was up to 6,131. In most of these years between these two points, the annual total went up by well over 1,000 year-to-year.

One thing that can impact ticket totals for a given type of traffic violation is how common the violation is. How reflective do you think the increase in texting-and-driving tickets Massachusetts has experienced is of how Massachusetts drivers are acting out on the roads?

Another thing that can impact ticketing levels is what actions law enforcement takes regarding enforcing a given traffic law. A lot can change in how a given law in enforced in the time after it is initially enacted. What types of enforcement measures and strategies do you think are best when it comes to Massachusetts’ texting-and-driving ban?
